Boy ‘assaulted’ at day care in Delhi; principal, 3 others booked under POCSO; 1 arrested

Delhi police have arrested one employee of a private daycare and playschool in Jaffrabad, northeast Delhi, two days after a three-year-old boy’s father filed a complaint alleging physical assault and sexual harassment at the facility. The arrest comes after a case was registered under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the Juvenile Justice Act, and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Authorities are continuing efforts to locate and arrest the remaining three accused individuals.

According to police records, the case was filed on August 28 against the school’s support staff member, principal, teacher, and director. The accused are charged under Sections 115(2) and 126(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Sections 75 and 82 of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015, and Section 12 of the POCSO Act. A senior police officer stated that legal proceedings will follow after a review of CCTV footage and other collected evidence.

The father of the child reported that his son had been refusing to attend school for several days and showed signs of distress while using the restroom. On August 18, the child began vomiting, prompting his parents to take him to an ENT specialist. The doctor identified severe swelling in both eardrums and concluded the child had been beaten. The parents requested access to the school’s CCTV footage, but were charged ₹1,500 by the school director before being granted access on August 25.

The footage, covering August 16 to 18, allegedly shows the child being tied to a chair, slapped, having his ears pulled, and the chair being kicked by a teacher and support staff member. The incident reportedly occurred in a classroom with other children present. The father stated that during playtime, his son was always kept with teachers and restrained in the chair.

On August 27, the child underwent a medical examination at GTB Hospital. The medico-legal certificate confirmed “physical assault,” noting swelling on his left thigh and an abrasion near his left eye. The father described his son’s ongoing trauma, saying the child becomes visibly distressed at the mere mention of using the restroom.

The father recounted his confrontation with the school director, who reportedly dismissed the abuse with the remark, “Aise to bachche roz pit te hain (Children are beaten like this every day).” The father expressed concern over limited access to footage, questioning how long the abuse may have persisted.

Police continue their investigation, with efforts underway to apprehend the remaining three accused individuals.
