DGCA cautioned about Tecnam aircraft safety before Kanpur crash
DGCA issued safety warnings on Tecnam planes over a month before the August 27 Kanpur crash killed two pilots. Regulator's July 2026 advisory followed 2022 Bhiwani crash analysis and called for better emergency training.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) had flagged safety concerns about Tecnam aircraft more than a month before a Tecnam P2006T training plane crashed in Kanpur on August 27, killing instructor Sachin Bhatia and trainee pilot Abhishek Pujari.
The aviation regulator issued safety recommendations to flying training organisations (FTOs) in July 2026, urging them to act immediately. The latest notice, dated July 10, 2026, was based on the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau’s findings from a 2022 twin-engine Tecnam P2006T crash at Bhiwani in Haryana. The AAIB’s final report, available on its website, recommended avoiding prolonged parking on hot aprons before flights and strengthening emergency-handling drills for Tecnam aircraft. It also called for revised checklists to include all OEM-recommended emergency actions.
An earlier DGCA reminder on August 4, 2025, had asked FTOs to complete a feedback checklist assessing the operational performance of Tecnam aircraft. A senior flying instructor, speaking on condition of anonymity, told PTI that Tecnam models, while affordable, present reliability and maintenance challenges compared with older designs like Diamond and Cessna aircraft. The instructor suggested the DGCA consider temporary grounding until a full safety reassessment is completed.
On August 27, a Tecnam P2006T operated by Garg Aviation crashed near the Ganga in Kanpur’s Katri area about 20 minutes after takeoff from Kanpur Civil Airport. The aircraft, registered VT-NBV, was destroyed, leaving only the tail visible in widely shared images. Garg Aviation stated there were no maintenance-related deficiencies.
The Ministry of Civil Aviation said the AAIB will lead the technical investigation, assisted by a three-member DGCA oversight team. Investigators will review maintenance and airworthiness records, flying hours, aircraft age, engine operating limits, and possible technical or human factors.
