Two workers at Germany’s largest airport died from malaria, prompting authorities to launch a public health response and reassure the public that the risk to travellers and staff remains low. The deaths, the first in a series of cases linked to Frankfurt Airport, have led to the deployment of mosquito traps, a review of aircraft disinfection protocols and a call for doctors to consider malaria in patients with unexplained fever.

The German health department confirmed that six people have been diagnosed with malaria‑tropicalis – the most dangerous form of the disease – in connection with their work at the airport. Two of those infected, a male employee who fell ill at the beginning of July and a female employee who became sick in mid‑August, succumbed to the disease. The other four cases were treated in hospital and have since recovered. All infected individuals were notified of the danger signs and advised to seek medical care promptly.

In an effort to contain the outbreak, Fraport, the operator of Frankfurt Airport, has installed mosquito traps around the premises. Mosquitoes captured in the traps are being examined at a tropical‑medicine laboratory in Antwerp, Belgium, to determine the species involved. The Robert Koch Institute, Germany’s federal institute for disease control, has identified the likely vector as an Anopheles stephensi mosquito that was imported on an aircraft. The institute also noted that the phenomenon of “airport malaria” – where mosquitoes from endemic regions are transported in cabins or baggage holds – is rare but can be fatal if diagnosis is delayed.

Health officials have issued letters to all airport workers warning them of the symptoms of malaria and urging vigilance. Doctors are being asked to maintain a high index of suspicion for patients who work in or near the airport and present with unexplained fever. “The mosquito is probably already dead,” said Peter Tinnemann, head of Frankfurt’s health department, to Hessische Rundfunk. He added that higher temperatures in Germany increase the likelihood of mosquitoes surviving for longer periods, but that the overall risk to the population of Frankfurt was low. He cautioned against assuming that any headache or fever in an employee automatically indicates malaria, noting that the rise in cases warranted a review of existing measures such as aircraft disinfection and elimination of breeding sites.

The health department’s statement acknowledged the existence of “airport malaria” and emphasized that human‑to‑human transmission is not possible. It stressed that because the event is very rare, malaria could easily be overlooked, leading to delayed diagnosis and higher mortality. The department also noted that the last documented outbreak of airport malaria in Germany occurred at Frankfurt in 2023, when a single case was successfully treated.

A study that compiled all cases of airport and baggage malaria in Europe from 1969 to 2024 found 145 instances, nine of which were in Germany. The majority of malaria cases worldwide – about 90% – occur in sub‑Saharan Africa, where several countries with direct flight links to Frankfurt, including Ethiopia, Kenya, Nigeria and Tanzania, have high to widespread transmission risk. Namibia and South Africa also have direct flights but are considered to have moderate to low risk.

In response to the outbreak, the German health authorities are conducting a detailed investigation to clarify how the workers contracted the disease and to assess whether current protocols are adequate. They have also increased surveillance of mosquitoes at the airport and are coordinating with international partners to ensure that aircraft are properly treated to eliminate potential mosquito vectors. The public is urged to remain calm while authorities work to prevent further cases and to provide clear guidance to travelers and airport staff on recognizing and reporting symptoms.
