Google Translate Misinterprets Apple’s iPhone Ultra Event Tagline in China
Google Translate suggests Apple’s China event tagline hints at a foldable iPhone, but experts say the translation is incorrect. The event is set for September.

Apple has confirmed that its highly anticipated September event will take place on September 12, 2026, and the company has released the event’s tagline in Chinese. The localized phrase, “亮新篇,来耀眼,” translates roughly to “Shining a new chapter, come be flashy.” The event, scheduled for 10:00 a.m. local time, is expected to showcase Apple’s first foldable iPhone, a device that has been the subject of speculation for years.
When the Chinese tagline was posted on Apple’s China website, a number of observers noted that the wording could be interpreted as a subtle hint about a folding device. The phrase “新篇” (new chapter) could be read as “unfolding,” and the word “亮” (shine) echoes the English tagline “Surprise and Shine.” Apple’s English marketing copy for the event, which has been confirmed by the company’s official communications, simply reads “Surprise and Shine,” a play on the phrase “rise and shine.”
In a recent post, a user on X (formerly Twitter) pointed out that the phrase “亮新篇,来耀眼” does not actually contain a reference to folding. The user noted that the Chinese words literally mean “Shining a new chapter, come be flashy,” and that the idea of “unfold” is not present in the original wording. The user linked to a screenshot of the event page and a translation from Google Translate, which rendered the phrase as “A new chapter unfolds, dazzling and brilliant.” The user argued that the machine translation had introduced the word “unfold” where it did not exist in the source text.
The Google Translate output has sparked discussion among Apple enthusiasts who had already been speculating about potential taglines that alluded to the upcoming foldable iPhone. Earlier in the week, several rumors circulated that Apple might use a tagline such as “A lot to unfold” or “Unfold the future” in the event’s promotional materials. The official “Surprise and Shine” tagline, however, appears to sidestep any direct reference to folding technology.
Other machine‑translation services produced different results when applied to the same Chinese phrase. Microsoft Translator, for example, rendered the tagline as “A new chapter shines, bright.” These discrepancies highlight the limitations of automated translation tools when dealing with marketing copy that may contain idiomatic or stylistic nuances.
Apple’s event is slated to run for approximately 90 minutes and will likely include the announcement of the new iPhone model, updates to the iOS operating system, and possibly other product or software releases. The foldable iPhone, if unveiled, would mark the company’s first foray into flexible display technology, a space that has been dominated by competitors such as Samsung and Huawei.
Industry analysts note that Apple’s decision to keep the event tagline ambiguous may be a strategic choice. By avoiding explicit references to folding, Apple can generate buzz through speculation while maintaining control over the narrative until the official reveal. The company’s marketing team has a history of using wordplay and subtle cues to build anticipation, as seen in past events such as the “Think Different” campaign.
The Chinese market remains a critical region for Apple, and the company’s choice of a bilingual tagline underscores its commitment to localizing content. While the English version remains straightforward, the Chinese version’s subtlety has provided fertile ground for fan theories and online discussion.
As the event approaches, Apple fans worldwide will be watching closely to see whether the company confirms the rumors of a foldable iPhone. Whether the tagline “Surprise and Shine” will be a hint or a distraction remains to be seen. Regardless, the event promises to be a focal point for the tech community, with expectations high for Apple’s next major hardware innovation.
