Greater Noida bus gangrape arrests trigger cop turf battle between Delhi, UP

The arrest of a bus driver and conductor by Delhi Police for the alleged gang-rape of a 16-year-old girl inside a moving sleeper bus from Greater Noida to Delhi has triggered a jurisdictional conflict with Uttar Pradesh Police. Authorities in Uttar Pradesh stated they were never informed about the case despite the crime originating within their jurisdiction.

The incident occurred on August 4 as the sleeper bus traveled 47 kilometers from Pari Chowk in Greater Noida to the Ring Road near the Kashmere Gate Inter-State Bus Terminal in Delhi, where the victim was left on the roadside by the accused.

Gautam Buddh Nagar police officials stated that the alleged crime occurred within their police commissionerate area and expressed dissatisfaction that Delhi Police did not communicate or report the incident to Noida Police prior to publicly disclosing the arrests.

In response to the jurisdictional row, Delhi Joint Commissioner of Police Madhur Verma stated that officers conducted themselves professionally. He highlighted that under the provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, crimes against women can be registered and investigated at any location where they are reported.

According to Deputy Commissioner of Police Niharika Bhatt, the minor survivor is a Class 11 student from Mainpuri, Uttar Pradesh, who had left her home to travel to a relative's house in Noida Sector 63. Due to darkness and heavy rain, she inadvertently got off at Pari Chowk, where the conductor allegedly misled her into believing the bus was headed to Sector 63.

Police investigations revealed there were no other passengers on the bus at the time. With the vehicle's curtains drawn, the driver and conductor allegedly assaulted the minor inside the moving bus and threatened to kill her if she resisted.

After the suspects dropped her off near Kashmere Gate, the survivor approached the local police station. Delhi Police analyzed closed-circuit television footage to trace the sleeper bus to a parking area in Timarpur, where both men were taken into custody within four hours.

The Kashmere Gate police station registered a First Information Report containing charges of gang-rape, kidnapping, assault, and relevant provisions under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act.
