Indian Stock Markets Dip as West Asian Tensions Push Oil Prices Higher
Sensex falls 0.40% and Nifty slides 0.39% on Monday as rising U.S.-Iran tensions lift crude to $91.30, spooking investors and fuelling fears of higher rates.

Indian stock markets closed lower on Monday, August 31, 2026, as escalating geopolitical tensions in West Asia pushed crude oil prices higher and renewed concerns over elevated interest rates. The 30-share BSE Sensex dropped 307.24 points, or 0.40 percent, to settle at 76,957.27, while the broader 50-share NSE Nifty fell 95.25 points, or 0.39 percent, to end at 24,080.40.
Selling pressure in utilities, IT, and fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) shares severely impacted investor sentiment, along with sustained foreign fund outflows and weak global cues. Intra-day trading saw the Sensex plunge as much as 513.19 points, or 0.66 percent, to hit a low of 76,751.32. Meanwhile, Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, jumped 3.63 percent to $91.30 per barrel amid rising fears of supply disruptions.
Among the 30 Sensex constituents, Adani Ports recorded the biggest loss, falling 4.11 percent. Index heavyweight HDFC Bank shed 1.53 percent, reversing earlier gains. The decline followed an announcement by Managing Director and CEO Sashidhar Jagdishan that he will seek reappointment when his current term ends on October 26. Other major laggards included ITC, Bharti Airtel, Infosys, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Trent, Hindustan Unilever, and Titan. On the other hand, Sun Pharma, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank, and State Bank of India gained ground to limit broader losses.
Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Investments Limited, attributed the market decline to escalating tensions between the U.S. and Iran, which have raised fears of energy-driven inflation and tighter monetary policy. He noted that recent remarks by the Federal Reserve Chair following the Jackson Hole address have heightened expectations of a potential September interest rate hike, keeping global bond yields elevated and contributing to volatility across emerging markets.
Ponmudi R, CEO of Enrich Money, stated that the Nifty slipped to a fresh monthly low as military escalation drove global yields to multi-year highs. He added that market caution was further influenced by the MSCI index rebalancing and the implementation of the new closing auction mechanism at the session end.
Sectoral performance was predominantly negative on the BSE, with Utilities falling 2.64 percent, followed by Metal, Services, Commodities, Power, and FMCG. However, financial services, bankex, and private bank indices managed to close higher. In broader Asian markets, South Korea and Shanghai recorded gains, while Japan and Hong Kong declined. Foreign Institutional Investors were net sellers on Friday, offloading equities worth 5,039.80 crore rupees.
