Instagram can now create Reels automatically – but Meta doesn’t want to upset creators

Instagram has introduced a new iPhone‑exclusive feature that can automatically assemble a Reel from user‑selected clips. The feature, called **First Draft**, lets creators tap a single button to cut pauses and trim footage, producing a ready‑to‑edit draft that can be further refined or published.
First Draft is designed as a starting point rather than a replacement for manual editing. Meta, the parent company of Instagram, has emphasized that the feature is fully reversible: users can reorder, adjust, or delete any part of the automatically generated edit before moving on to the full editor or posting the Reel. The company’s cautious approach is reflected in the feature’s name, which signals that it provides an initial cut that creators can build upon.
The feature is accessible in two ways within the iPhone app. Users can either open the Reels gallery, select one or more clips, and tap the “First Draft” button at the bottom of the screen; or they can film new content directly from the Instagram camera, tap “First Draft,” review the automatically generated edit, and then proceed to the full editor or publish. In both workflows, the automated trimming removes pauses and streamlines the footage, allowing creators to focus more quickly on creative decisions such as music, text, and effects.
Meta demonstrated the process in a post on Threads, showing the steps from clip selection to the automatically generated draft. The post illustrated how the feature can create a quick edit immediately after filming, offering a convenient option for creators who need a fast turnaround.
The feature is currently available only on the iPhone version of Instagram, with Android support expected later. Some creators have asked why First Draft is housed in the main Instagram app rather than in the separate Edits app. Meta replied that the feature could be made available in both apps if desired, indicating flexibility in how the tool is distributed across platforms.
While Instagram’s new tool may streamline the initial stages of Reel production, Meta remains careful not to suggest that it can replace the nuanced skills of professional creators. By framing First Draft as a “starting point,” the company acknowledges the value of manual editing while offering a practical shortcut for users who want to save time on basic trimming.
The introduction of First Draft comes amid growing competition among social‑media platforms to make short‑form video creation easier and more accessible. Instagram’s move to add automatic editing to its Reels feature reflects a broader industry trend toward AI‑driven tools that assist creators without diminishing their creative agency.
In summary, Instagram’s First Draft feature provides an iPhone‑only, one‑tap solution that automatically trims and cuts selected clips, producing a reversible draft that creators can refine or publish. Meta’s naming and positioning of the feature underscore its role as an aid rather than a replacement for manual editing, and the tool is currently limited to iOS with Android support anticipated in the future.
