Joe Root Addresses England's Batting Form and LBW Concerns Amid Series Win
Joe Root, England's top Test run-scorer, addresses recent batting struggles and lbw dismissals as his team secures a series win over Pakistan at Lord's.

England captain Joe Root remains confident despite a challenging summer with the bat, emphasizing his extensive experience and career achievements. Root, England’s all-time leading Test run-scorer with 14,208 runs, has struggled for form this season, averaging just 29.44 and passing fifty only twice. His recent struggles include nine leg-before-wicket (lbw) dismissals in his last seven Tests, seven of which occurred this summer, as he adapts to difficult batting conditions in England.
Root addressed his form during an interview with BBC’s *Today at the Test*, acknowledging the challenges posed by variable swing and seam movement in home conditions. He pointed to his longevity in the game, noting that only cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar has scored more Test runs than his 14,208. “There’s a reason why I’ve got 14,000 runs,” Root said. “I’ve always found ways of solving problems, and I don’t see this as being any different.” He also suggested that ball manufacturers Dukes may have altered the condition of the cricket ball this season, though Dukes denied any changes to their production process.
Former England captain Michael Vaughan expressed confidence in Root’s ability to overcome his current difficulties. “He’s always overcome problems, and I’m pretty sure he’ll overcome this one,” Vaughan told the BBC. Root’s form has drawn attention after a period of relative consistency, including a stretch last year where he was lbw only three times in Ashes Tests against Australia.
England secured a series win over Pakistan with a dominant 194-run victory in the second Test at Lord’s, marking Root’s second consecutive Test win as captain. The match saw England’s spin trio, including Shoaib Bashir, take three wickets apiece, though Root made only a modest contribution with the bat.
Root also addressed off-field issues, including the recent departure of pace bowler Brydon Carse from the squad following an incident outside a nightclub in Derby. Root called the situation “hacked off” and used the moment to remind his team of professional responsibility. After the Lord’s win, he urged the squad to celebrate responsibly, emphasizing the importance of maintaining discipline.
With England’s series victory secured, Root and his team will look to build momentum as they face future challenges, including the prospect of reclaiming the Ashes in challenging conditions.
