Madrid’s €6.3m penthouse row: Ayuso faces scrutiny over temporary office purchase
Madrid’s regional president Isabel Díaz Ayuso faces growing calls for transparency over a €6.3m penthouse purchase, initially claimed as a temporary office but later revealed as a residential property.

Madrid’s regional government, led by conservative People’s Party (PP) president Isabel Díaz Ayuso, faces mounting scrutiny over its €6.3 million purchase of a luxury penthouse in the upscale Chamberí district. The acquisition, intended as a temporary workspace during renovations at the regional government’s Real Casa de Correos headquarters, has drawn criticism from opposition parties, legal challenges, and public demands for transparency.
Ayuso, a vocal critic of Spain’s socialist prime minister Pedro Sánchez and his Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE), has repeatedly accused Sánchez’s government of corruption. Yet her administration now faces growing pressure to justify the penthouse purchase, which has raised questions about its necessity and legality. Spanish newspaper *El País* first reported the transaction in late July, revealing that the property, bought in April, was originally intended to serve as an office despite planning restrictions limiting its use to residential purposes.
The penthouse, described as between 250 and 400 square meters with a large terrace—a feature more typical of a private residence than an office—was acquired under questionable circumstances. Ayuso initially claimed she had “not had the faintest idea” about the purchase, dismissing reports as a “smear campaign.” However, her partner, businessman Alberto González Amador, later put two properties, including one linked to the penthouse, up for sale. González Amador is awaiting trial on charges of tax fraud and document falsification, which he denies.
The controversy deepened when Madrid’s regional government announced plans to sell the penthouse and donate the proceeds to wildfire relief efforts. Ayuso’s flippant remark to reporters, “Está en venta, chao pescao” (“It’s up for sale, so see you later, alligator”), drew comparisons to her past verbal gaffes, including a 2021 congressional outburst where she allegedly called Prime Minister Sánchez a “hijo de puta” (son of a bitch), later claiming she had said, “Me gusta la fruta” (“I like fruit”).
Legal and political fallout continues. A Madrid judge is investigating five separate complaints related to the purchase, while PP leader Alberto Núñez Feijóo, Ayuso’s superior, has publicly questioned why a property unsuitable for office use was acquired. Feijóo acknowledged that Ayuso’s team had informed him in April of their search for temporary offices, contradicting her claim of ignorance about the penthouse.
Opposition parties have seized on the scandal. PSOE officials mocked the government’s explanations, highlighting the absurdity of seeking an office with a “big terrace.” Political scientist Pablo Simón of Carlos III University of Madrid noted that the lack of clarity, combined with the judicial investigation, has weakened Ayuso politically. While unlikely to derail her reelection bid in next year’s regional vote, the controversy could force her to rely on the far-right Vox party for a governing majority.
The saga underscores broader concerns about transparency and accountability in Ayuso’s administration, even as she remains a prominent figure in Spain’s conservative opposition.
