Major curriculum overhaul planned for 2028 academic session: Mahdi Amin

Prime Minister’s Education Adviser Mahdi Amin has announced a major curriculum overhaul for Bangladesh’s primary and secondary education system, set to begin in the 2028 academic year. Speaking to BSS in an exclusive interview, Amin outlined sweeping reforms aimed at integrating merit, morality, and human values while ensuring quality education across the country.

The government’s initiative comes as part of a broader effort to restructure Bangladesh’s education sector, with the 2028 academic year marked as the starting point for comprehensive curriculum reforms. As a precursor, new subjects focusing on the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR), artificial intelligence (AI), and sports will be introduced in the 2027 academic year. Amin emphasized that these changes align with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s vision to prioritize education as a key government focus.

Under the interim measures for the 2027 academic year, four new books and subjects will be added to primary and secondary levels. These include “Sports and Culture” for Class IV students and “Learning with Happiness” and “Technical Education” for Class VI. The reforms aim to equip students with skills in robotics, AI, and modern technological education, preparing them for future workforce demands.

Addressing concerns over examination transparency, Amin criticized the previous administration’s practices, stating that GPA-5 results were artificially inflated under a “fascist regime.” He confirmed that the current government has discontinued grace marks, ensuring fair and transparent evaluations for the SSC and equivalent examinations. For students who failed or are at risk of dropping out, the government plans to provide vocational training, financial assistance, and entrepreneurship opportunities through technical training centres.

To combat unemployment, the government is establishing employment exchange centres at divisional and district levels. These centres will connect job seekers with employers, allowing youth to register their skills and find employment opportunities. The initiative includes collaboration with the private sector to offer targeted technical training and capacity-building programs, prioritizing marginalized communities.

The education adviser also highlighted efforts to modernize the teaching profession. Under the “One Teacher, One Tab” program, digital tablets will be distributed to teachers nationwide to facilitate digital training and skill enhancement. This aligns with broader goals to improve research culture and global university rankings in Bangladesh. Joint research initiatives between universities and industries are being developed to address local challenges, while financial allocations for research are being significantly increased.

To reduce inequality between rural and urban schools, national competitions such as the “Primary School Gold Cup Football Tournament” and “Innovation and Startup Competition” have been introduced. These programs aim to recognize and nurture talent from remote areas, providing them with national exposure and opportunities.

Amin underscored the government’s commitment to fostering a skilled, employable generation with strong ethics and human values, moving beyond traditional certificate-based education. The reforms reflect a holistic approach to transforming Bangladesh’s education system and preparing students for future challenges.
