Middlesbrough's Crime Crisis: Decades of Failed Policies Unleash Chaos

Middlesbrough is grappling with a surge in violent crime after two deadly incidents—first a high-speed collision and then an alleged arson attack—both suspected to be gang-related. The incidents left nine people dead and prompted the deployment of around 200 additional police officers to investigate and restore order. Former Middlesbrough mayor Andy Preston has criticized lenient policies toward criminals, arguing that decades of permissiveness have emboldened lawbreakers and left law-abiding residents vulnerable.

Preston, who served as mayor from 2019 to 2023, pointed to recent events as proof of a growing breakdown in social order. On Friday, he stood near memorials for Police Constables Matthew Blades and Tom Clough, victims of the weekend crash. Just 200 meters away lies Boho X, a major employer in the region—a 60,000-square-foot global headquarters for games developer Double Eleven—and a thriving cluster of small businesses. Teesside boasts strong industrial investment, apprenticeships, colleges, and one of Britain’s largest digital sectors. Yet, Preston rejects claims that deprivation drives criminal behavior, calling such arguments excuses.

"I’ve met residents too frightened to talk to me near their own homes," he said. "Some were even too scared to contact Crimestoppers anonymously."

Preston cited the high-speed crash, in which four of five drivers had prior convictions totaling 37 offenses but had never served prison time. This, he argues, demonstrates a pattern: criminals face little consequence, emboldening further lawlessness. He recalled installing reinforced CCTV systems during his tenure, only to see criminals destroy them with industrial grinders or ram vehicles into camera masts.

The former mayor emphasized that the real victims are average citizens—cleaners, warehouse workers, bus drivers and their children—whose lives are disrupted by intimidation and violence. He criticized national responses that focus on empathy for criminals rather than protection of victims, calling it a misguided approach that has worsened the problem.

"The truly compassionate response is to protect the victim," Preston said. "That means enough police to make getting caught a likely outcome of committing a crime. We need courts that swiftly judge and punish offenders while the crime is still fresh, and enough prison cells to keep dangerous criminals locked up."

Preston stressed that Middlesbrough is not unique. While most residents go about their lives peacefully, a small but toxic minority operates outside accepted social rules. He urged a shift in focus: instead of asking what society failed to provide these individuals, the question must be why society has tolerated their behavior for so long.
