Misled into boarding bus, received death threat: What survivor told cops on gangrape in Greater Noida

A 16-year-old girl from Uttar Pradesh’s Mainpuri was allegedly gang-raped inside a moving sleeper bus in Greater Noida after the driver and conductor misled her into boarding the vehicle on August 4, police said Monday. The accused, both in their early 20s and from Kanpur, have been arrested following an FIR filed at Kashmere Gate police station under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act for alleged gang-rape, kidnapping, and assault.

The incident occurred near Pari Chowk in Greater Noida before the bus traveled approximately 47 kilometers to Ring Road near the Kashmere Gate Inter-State Bus Terminal in Delhi, where the accused allegedly abandoned the survivor. According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) Niharika Bhatt, the Class 11 student had left her home in Mainpuri without informing her parents after a disagreement with her mother over her studies. She was en route to her cousin’s house in Sector 63, Noida.

Police said the girl mistakenly disembarked at Pari Chowk after dark as rain began to pour. She signaled a bus to stop, believing it was heading toward Sector 63. The bus, which was empty and returning from repairs at a workshop in Surajpur, was driven by the accused. The conductor allegedly assured her it was headed in the right direction before she boarded.

Once the bus was in motion, the conductor began acting inappropriately, and both men then allegedly sexually assaulted the survivor and threatened her with death if she resisted. The bus traveled via the Greater Noida-Noida Expressway, entered Delhi through the Chilla border, passed through Mayur Vihar, and reached Ring Road, where the accused left her before fleeing.

Police said curtains were drawn across the bus windows, obstructing visibility from outside. The survivor later went to Kashmere Gate police station, where Delhi Police registered the case and launched an investigation. Using CCTV footage, a team tracked the bus to a parking area in Timarpur, about 15 minutes from Kashmere Gate, and arrested the two accused within four hours.

During questioning, the accused claimed the bus had “developed a mechanical problem” and was sent for repairs in Surajpur. They admitted to targeting the survivor after noticing her near Pari Chowk post-repair, misleading her about the bus’s destination.
