French Journalist Christophe Gleizes Remains Imprisoned in Algeria; Colleagues Demand Release
Paris, France – July 15, 2025
Christophe Gleizes, a journalist with the French publications Society and So Foot, has been held in detention in Algeria since June 29, 2025. The circumstances surrounding his arrest remain unclear, and no official charges have been made public by Algerian authorities.
Gleizes’ detention has drawn concern from press freedom advocates in France and abroad. His colleagues at Society and So Foot have issued a public statement calling for his immediate release. “We do not forget Christophe Gleizes,” the statement reads. “We demand his freedom without delay.”
The French Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that consular officials are in contact with Algerian authorities regarding Gleizes’ case. A ministry spokesperson stated that they are following the situation closely and are providing consular assistance where possible. However, the spokesperson declined to provide further details on the grounds of privacy and ongoing diplomatic efforts.
The Algerian government has not publicly commented on the case. International organizations such as Reporters Without Borders (RSF) and the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) have also expressed concern. RSF issued a statement urging Algerian authorities to clarify the reasons for Gleizes’ detention and to ensure his safety. “Journalists should not be subjected to arbitrary detention for carrying out their professional duties,” the statement read.
Gleizes, 42, is known for his investigative reporting and has worked for Society and So Foot for over a decade. His most recent work focused on cultural and social issues in France. Colleagues describe him as a dedicated and respected journalist.
The lack of transparency surrounding Gleizes’ arrest has raised questions about the conditions of his detention and the legal basis for his imprisonment. Without official confirmation from Algerian authorities, speculation about the reasons for his detention has been limited.
France has a long-standing diplomatic relationship with Algeria, and bilateral relations remain stable despite occasional disputes. However, press freedom organizations have urged the French government to use its influence to secure Gleizes’ release.
In the coming days, French officials are expected to continue diplomatic efforts to clarify Gleizes’ status and advocate for his return to France. Meanwhile, his colleagues and press freedom advocates continue to call for his immediate release, emphasizing the importance of protecting journalists who work in challenging environments.
As of today, no further updates on Gleizes’ legal status or well-being have been made available by Algerian authorities. The case remains under close observation by international press freedom organizations and the French government.
