PM Modi gets Uzbekistan's highest state honour, Order of Oliy Darajali Do‘stlik

Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India received Uzbekistan's highest state honor, the Order of Oliy Darajali Do‘stlik, during a two-day state visit to Tashkent, underscoring the deepening strategic partnership between the two nations. President Shavkat Mirziyoyev of Uzbekistan presented the award in recognition of Modi’s contributions to strengthening India-Uzbekistan relations, which have been elevated to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

The ceremony took place as both leaders engaged in delegation-level talks to expand cooperation across multiple sectors, including trade, security, and cultural exchange. The Order of Oliy Darajali Do‘stlik, which translates to the Order of Highest Friendship, is awarded to individuals who have significantly advanced bilateral ties. Previous recipients include Kazakhstan’s President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, Turkmenistan’s President Serdar Berdimuhamedov, and United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres.

Speaking after receiving the honor, Modi expressed gratitude to President Mirziyoyev, describing him as a “brother” and a leader who has spearheaded economic reforms in Uzbekistan. Modi highlighted the warmth of the Uzbek people’s welcome during his visit, calling the experience unforgettable. He emphasized that the award symbolizes not just his personal recognition but the shared heritage and friendship between India and Uzbekistan.

“The words you used for me reflect India’s ancient heritage, our spirit of universal brotherhood, and the hard work of 1.4 billion citizens,” Modi said, referring to Mirziyoyev’s remarks during the ceremony. He added that the honor truly belongs to the people of India, reflecting the centuries-old friendship between the two nations.

Modi further underscored the significance of the word “Dostlik,” meaning friendship, stating that it encapsulates the core of India-Uzbekistan relations. “This single word beautifully captures the essence of our partnership,” he remarked, dedicating the award to the longstanding ties between both countries.

The Prime Minister also credited President Mirziyoyev’s visionary leadership for the strengthened bilateral relationship, which has been elevated to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. Modi assured that India remains committed to deepening this friendship and fulfilling the responsibilities that come with the honor.

The visit and the conferment of the award mark a significant milestone in India-Uzbekistan relations, reflecting mutual respect and a shared commitment to global welfare, particularly for the Global South.
