Slow start makes me want to stay - Norris extends McLaren deal to 2030

Lando Norris has signed a contract extension with McLaren, committing to the team through at least the end of the 2030 Formula 1 season. The 26-year-old British driver made the announcement on Saturday, calling the decision an "easy yes" during an interview with BBC Sport. Norris, who debuted in Formula 1 with McLaren in 2019, has spent his entire F1 career with the Woking-based team.

Norris revealed he did not seriously consider offers from other teams. "There was some interest from elsewhere," he said, "but I don't want to go anywhere. I don’t want to be with another team. I don't want to spend time with other people." His loyalty stems from strong relationships within the organization, particularly with McLaren CEO Zak Brown and team principal Andrea Stella. Norris highlighted the team's recent success as a key reason for his commitment. McLaren won consecutive Constructors' Championships in 2024 and 2025, ending a 26-year title drought dating back to 1998, and Norris secured the Drivers' Championship last season.

The early months of the 2026 Formula 1 season have been challenging for McLaren. The team has struggled to adapt to new regulations introduced this year, starting the season well off the pace set in 2024 and 2025. Despite this slow start, Norris emphasized that it reinforced his decision to stay. "This beginning of the year is the perfect example of what doesn't make me turn my head the other way," he said. "In fact, it's more the opposite. It makes me want to stick with the people that I am with."

McLaren has shown signs of improvement in recent races. After implementing a major upgrade to their car, Norris won the Hungarian and Dutch Grands Prix. This surge in performance has narrowed the gap to Mercedes’ championship leader Kimi Antonelli to 83 points, with 11 races remaining. Norris acknowledged the challenge of defending his title but expressed confidence in the team’s ability to fight for victories and podiums.

Team principal Andrea Stella praised Norris, calling him an "exceptional driver" who combines speed with maturity and commitment. Stella also highlighted Norris’ role in McLaren’s return to the front of Formula 1. McLaren CEO Zak Brown echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the team’s commitment to developing world-class talent like Norris.

Norris remains focused on the future, stating he believes the bond within the team will remain strong throughout his career. Despite a tough start to the season, he expressed satisfaction in racing for McLaren and enjoys the competitive environment. "People get too hung up sometimes on saying, 'is it the right place?'" he said. "I believe it is, but even if it wasn't, the fact that I can just say I'm a driver for McLaren and I race for McLaren, that makes me happy enough."
