Spurs manager De Zerbi calls Newcastle win 'unfair result' as they sit bottom

Tottenham Hotspur manager Roberto De Zerbi has criticized the outcome of his team's 2-0 defeat to Newcastle United in the Premier League, calling the result unfair. The loss, which occurred on Matchday 33 of the 2023-24 season, leaves Tottenham at the bottom of the Premier League table with just eight points from 33 games. Newcastle United's victory at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium marked their third consecutive league win and extended their unbeaten run to 11 matches.

Newcastle secured their win through goals from Bruno Guimarães in the 57th minute and Anthony Gordon in the 90th. The visitors dominated possession and created more clear chances, while Tottenham struggled to threaten the Newcastle goal. De Zerbi, who took charge of Tottenham in the summer of 2023, expressed frustration with officiating decisions and missed opportunities, stating that his team did not deserve to lose.

"I think it is an unfair result for us," De Zerbi told reporters after the match. "We didn’t play bad, we created a lot of chances, but we didn’t score. The second goal was very tough for us. It’s difficult to accept."

The defeat follows a difficult spell for Tottenham, who have won only one of their last eight Premier League matches. The club sits in 18th place, four points adrift of 17th-placed Nottingham Forest, with only seven games remaining in the season. Newcastle’s strong form under manager Eddie Howe has seen them climb to fourth in the table, just four points behind second-placed Arsenal.

De Zerbi acknowledged the challenges his team faces in avoiding relegation, saying, "We need to stay focused and work hard. The situation is tough, but we have to believe in ourselves."

Tottenham’s next match is against Brighton & Hove Albion on April 20, while Newcastle will face Arsenal three days later. Both teams will be looking to secure crucial points as the season approaches its climax.
