Three-storey building collapses at Swaminarayan temple in Prayagraj, no casualties
A three-storey building collapsed at a Swaminarayan temple in Prayagraj's George Town area, with no casualties reported. Officials cite water accumulation weakening the foundation.

A three-storey building collapsed Friday night on the premises of the Swaminarayan temple in Prayagraj’s George Town area, Uttar Pradesh, officials said. No casualties were reported. The structure, located opposite K.P. College, fell around 10:30 p.m. on August 28, 2026, according to temple authorities.
Swaminarayan temple kothari Kamlesh Bhagat said a construction project was ongoing behind the collapsed building. He stated that a large pit had been dug for the work and remained filled with water for several weeks. Bhagat believes the prolonged water exposure weakened the building’s foundation, leading to the collapse.
The affected building had 12 rooms and had shown visible cracks in recent days. Temple authorities had closed it about a week before the collapse as a precaution. At the time of the incident, the building was unoccupied, and no injuries or fatalities have been reported.
Local fire and disaster response teams were deployed immediately after the collapse. They cordoned off the area and conducted a safety assessment. Preliminary investigations suggest structural failure due to waterlogging as the likely cause. The temple administration has launched an inquiry and is coordinating with municipal authorities to determine accountability and prevent similar incidents.
The Swaminarayan temple management has assured that all temple activities will continue safely and that structural audits will be carried out on nearby buildings. The incident has raised concerns among residents and local leaders about construction practices near heritage and religious sites in Prayagraj.
Authorities are reviewing building permits and drainage systems in the area. While no official statement has been issued regarding compensation, temple officials have indicated they will support affected parties as needed.
