Truck Driver Arrested After Thrikkakara Accident Kills Two Youths

Police arrested a truck driver on Friday after he allegedly fled the scene of a fatal accident in Kerala’s Ernakulam district, leaving two young men dead. The incident occurred Thursday night on the Thrikkakara bypass, where the trailer truck driven by B. Mishra, a resident of Uttar Pradesh, collided with a two-wheeler. According to investigators, Mishra abandoned the truck at the accident site but later returned and used a spare key to drive the vehicle more than 400 kilometers to Salem in Tamil Nadu before being taken into custody.

Officials from the Ernakulam City Police confirmed that the bodies of the two deceased men, identified as residents of Tripunithura and Kakkanad, were recovered from the crash site. Preliminary reports indicate the two-wheeler rider and pillion rider were pronounced dead at the scene. Police sources stated that Mishra had no prior criminal record but admitted to driving away to avoid legal consequences.

The Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) and local traffic enforcement agencies are reviewing safety protocols following the incident. Senior police officers have emphasized the importance of immediate reporting of accidents and strict adherence to traffic laws. The truck, registered in Kasaragod district, was seized and transported back to Ernakulam for forensic examination.

Investigations are ongoing to determine whether speeding, mechanical failure, or driver fatigue contributed to the collision. Mishra remains in police custody as authorities gather additional evidence and prepare charges related to rash driving and failure to render assistance at the scene of an accident.

Neighborhood residents expressed shock over the accident and Mishra’s alleged actions. Local leaders have called for stricter monitoring of commercial vehicles from other states operating on Kerala roads. The Kerala Motor Transport Workers Union has demanded enhanced safety training for interstate truck drivers.

The case has drawn attention to road safety concerns in Kerala, where high-traffic corridors like the Thrikkakara bypass are frequent sites of fatal crashes. Authorities are reviewing surveillance footage and interviewing witnesses to reconstruct the sequence of events leading up to the crash.
