UK Launches H5N1 Bird Flu Vaccine Trial Amid Pandemic Fears
The UK has begun a major trial for an H5N1 bird flu vaccine using mRNA technology, targeting high-risk groups like poultry workers. The study aims to assess safety and immunity, with potential pandemic preparedness.

The United Kingdom has initiated a clinical trial for an experimental vaccine targeting the H5N1 avian influenza strain, a potential precursor to a human pandemic. The trial, announced by health authorities, marks the first time volunteers in the UK have received the vaccine, which utilizes mRNA technology similar to widely deployed COVID-19 vaccines.
The H5N1 strain has caused significant outbreaks in bird populations globally and has occasionally infected mammals, though human transmission remains low. According to the UK Health Security Agency, nearly all human cases have been linked to direct contact with infected animals. The trial aims to assess the vaccine’s safety and immune response in high-risk groups, including poultry industry workers and individuals aged 65 and older. A total of 4,000 participants will be enrolled across 26 sites in England and Scotland, with additional participants in the United States.
Clare Howard, a Hampshire resident and longtime poultry keeper, was among the first to receive the vaccine at a clinic in Southampton. "It was quite easy and it could be something that ultimately proves incredibly important," she stated. The trial is led by Dr. Rebecca Clark, a national coordinating investigator, who emphasized the evolving nature of the H5N1 strain and the need to prepare for potential human-to-human transmission. "Although it does not yet move easily between humans, we have to treat human-to-human transmission as a real possibility," she said.
Since 2024, there have been 116 confirmed human cases of H5N1 worldwide, most associated with animal contact. The study will determine whether the vaccine can generate a robust immune response, with the possibility of licensing it for widespread use if successful. In anticipation, the UK has secured manufacturing capacity at Moderna’s facility in Oxfordshire, which can produce up to 100 million doses annually, expandable to 250 million in a pandemic scenario. Unlike traditional egg-based flu vaccines, mRNA technology allows for rapid adaptation and scaling, a lesson learned from the COVID-19 response.
The trial is funded in part by CEPI, the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations, which contributed £40 million. Moderna has agreed to prioritize equitable distribution to low- and middle-income countries, addressing concerns of "vaccine nationalism" that emerged during the COVID-19 pandemic. This initiative follows earlier attempts at H5N1 vaccines, including a 2006 trial in Oxford that yielded limited effectiveness despite safety.
While H5N1’s pandemic potential remains uncertain, historical precedents underscore the risk. The 1918 Spanish flu pandemic killed an estimated 50 million people, and even milder strains, such as the 2009 swine flu, caused widespread disruption. The H5N1 virus has shown variability, with some recent cases in the U.S. presenting milder symptoms, primarily eye inflammation. Globally, since 2003, the WHO has recorded around 1,000 human cases, nearly half of which were fatal.
The trial’s launch comes amid shifting public health priorities. In August 2025, the U.S. government reduced mRNA vaccine funding by $500 million following skepticism from Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who questioned the technology’s safety for respiratory viruses. CEPI’s intervention ensures continued progress in pandemic preparedness. The trial represents a proactive step toward mitigating future health crises, though the unpredictable nature of influenza underscores the ongoing challenge of global disease prevention.
