US lawmakers praise Punjab's brick-kiln modernization drive for ethical investment

Members of the United States Congressional Pakistan Caucus have commended the Punjab provincial government for its ambitious campaign to modernize the brick-kiln sector. In an official letter addressed to Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, U.S. Representatives Thomas Suozzi and Jack Bergman expressed their sincere appreciation for the initiative, which seeks to mitigate severe environmental challenges while taking decisive steps to eliminate systemic bonded labor across the region.

The congressional leaders highlighted that mechanizing and modernizing brick kiln operations will assist Pakistan in fulfilling its commitments under international labor and human rights agreements. Beyond regulatory compliance, the U.S. lawmakers pointed out that introducing cleaner and more efficient production technology will position Punjab as a far more appealing destination for foreign direct investment. American businesses seeking ethical, sustainable, and transparent partnerships abroad are increasingly prioritizing regions with established labor and environmental safeguards.

The provincial initiative directly targets the peshgi system, an entrenched form of debt bondage prevalent within the traditional brick-making industry. Citing findings from the U.S. State Department 2022 Trafficking in Persons Report, the lawmakers noted that more than 4.5 million people in Pakistan remain trapped in bonded labor. Under the peshgi system, vulnerable workers accept financial advance payments from kiln owners, often resulting in intergenerational debt cycles that restrict their freedom of movement and legal rights.

According to the letter, recent briefings received by the U.S. lawmakers demonstrated the provincial administration's strong commitment to achieving transformative structural change in the industry. Suozzi and Bergman emphasized that Punjab is exceptionally well placed to serve as a pilot province for these reforms. A successful overhaul in Punjab could provide a scalable model for other regions in Pakistan striving to modernize heavy industries, reduce toxic air pollution, and eradicate forced labor practices.

The caucus members noted that these industrial and labor reforms will enhance bilateral economic relations and strengthen the overall strategic partnership between Pakistan and the United States. By aligning industrial practices with modern international standards, Punjab can cultivate stronger trade, commercial, and investment ties with Western markets.

Concluding their message, the U.S. lawmakers reaffirmed their full support for the country's drive to eradicate forced work practices, stating that the Congressional Pakistan Caucus wholeheartedly supports all efforts to end bonded labor. They encouraged Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif and her provincial leadership to maintain open communication and reach out for assistance whenever needed as the implementation of the modernization program moves forward.
