Who is Divya Mittal? IAS officer resigns after 13 years in civil services

Uttar Pradesh-cadre IAS officer Divya Mittal has resigned from the Indian Administrative Service after 13 years of service, ending a career marked by notable postings and administrative achievements. Mittal, a 2013-batch officer, announced her decision in a post on X, stating, "Today, I have voluntarily resigned from the IAS, bringing to an end an unforgettable journey of 13 years." The reason behind her resignation remains undisclosed.

Born in Rewari, Haryana, Mittal holds a BTech degree from IIT Delhi and an MBA from IIM Bangalore. After working in London post-MBA, she returned to India to prepare for the UPSC Civil Services Examination. She initially qualified for the Indian Police Service in 2012 before securing the 68th rank in the 2013 civil services examination, joining the IAS.

Mittal's career included serving as district magistrate in Sant Kabir Nagar, Mirzapur, and Deoria. Her tenure in Mirzapur gained attention when tap water was supplied to Lahuriadah, a remote hill village in Halia block, for the first time in 75 years since Independence. In Deoria, she focused on implementing government schemes at the grassroots and took decisive administrative actions.

In her resignation post, Mittal reflected on her experiences. "Deoria taught me that standing with what is right is not an option, but a duty. Mirzapur taught me that 'impossible' is not a fact, but just an opinion." She also highlighted the human aspect of governance, noting that working with marginalized communities and farmers revealed the real people behind government files.

Prior to her civil service career, Mittal worked in London after completing her MBA. Despite professional success there, she felt a void. "Even after achieving everything, something felt incomplete. The fact that I was not in my country troubled me," she wrote. Mittal credited India for her education and growth, stating, "I returned and was fortunate enough to become an IAS officer."

While Mittal's resignation has been announced, it has not yet been formally received by the Uttar Pradesh government. A senior official told PTI, "We have not yet received her resignation," adding that appropriate action will follow once the formal letter is received.
