Far-right Israeli minister boasts of worsening conditions for Palestinian prisoners

Israel’s far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir has publicly endorsed harsher conditions for Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli facilities, drawing condemnation from Palestinian authorities and human rights groups.

In a video released by Ben Gvir on social media, a female Palestinian detainee described worsening prison conditions, stating that inmates had not been allowed to shower for three days and had not changed their underwear. The detainee warned that such conditions could lead to disease outbreaks within the prison population.

Ben Gvir responded approvingly in the video, saying he was “proud” that prison conditions had been reduced to the “bare minimum.” He also declared that “the summer camps in the prisons are over,” a remark interpreted as an end to any perceived leniency in detention standards.

The Palestinian Authority’s Commission on Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs strongly criticized Ben Gvir’s remarks, accusing him of promoting “brutality, hatred and racism” in his approach to incarcerated Palestinians. The commission called on international human rights organizations to intervene and hold Israeli authorities accountable for what it described as systematic violations of prisoners' rights.

Human rights organizations, including Amnesty International and the Israel-based group B’Tselem, have previously documented allegations of abuse and degrading treatment against Palestinian prisoners in Israeli detention centers. These groups argue that such policies violate international law, particularly the Fourth Geneva Convention, which governs the treatment of protected persons in occupied territories.

Ben Gvir, a key figure in Israel’s far-right coalition government led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, has long been a controversial figure due to his inflammatory rhetoric toward Palestinians. His latest comments come amid rising tensions in the West Bank and Gaza, where Palestinian militant groups and Israeli security forces have engaged in frequent clashes.

The Israeli Prison Service has not issued an official response to the allegations raised in Ben Gvir’s video. However, critics argue that his public endorsement of harsher conditions sets a dangerous precedent for prison authorities and could further deteriorate the treatment of Palestinian detainees.
