Hyundai to Launch Extended-Range EVs in US, Expands Eco-Friendly Lineup
Hyundai announces extended-range electric vehicles for the US, including the Santa Fe EREV and Genesis GV70 Hybrid, aiming to address range anxiety and boost eco-friendly sales by 2030.

Hyundai is expanding its lineup in the United States with the introduction of extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs), responding to shifting market demands and regulatory changes in key automotive markets. The South Korean automaker plans to launch EREV versions of its three-row Santa Fe and luxury Genesis GV70, marking a strategic shift toward vehicles that combine electric driving with extended range capabilities.
The Santa Fe EREV, set to be produced in Hyundai’s Alabama plant, will feature a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system, offering a combined range exceeding 600 miles. Its Genesis counterpart, the GV70 EREV, is expected to deliver up to 640 miles of total range. These models follow regulatory changes in China that prioritize vehicles capable of traveling at least 100 kilometers (about 62 miles) on electric power alone, effectively sidelining shorter-range plug-in hybrids from government incentives. The move aligns with a broader industry trend where automakers are developing EREVs as a bridge between traditional hybrids and full battery-electric vehicles.
Hyundai’s EREV initiative is part of a larger corporate strategy. By 2030, the company aims for conventional hybrids to constitute half of its U.S. sales, supported by an expansion of North American production capacity by 500,000 units. This expansion includes plans for new body-on-frame SUVs and pickup trucks, such as the Boulder concept showcased at the New York Auto Show. The company’s luxury division, Genesis, will also contribute to this push, with additional EREV models under development.
The automotive industry’s pivot toward EREVs reflects a response to consumer concerns over driving range, a persistent barrier to wider electric vehicle adoption. Unlike traditional plug-in hybrids, where the internal combustion engine directly propels the wheels, EREVs use the engine solely to generate electricity, allowing for greater electric-only range and more efficient operation. This design has gained traction globally, with competitors like Stellantis and Ford also developing EREV platforms for upcoming models including the Jeep Grand Wagoneer and Ram 1500 REV.
Despite the growing interest in EREVs, challenges remain. Consumer hesitation persists, particularly among those accustomed to traditional hybrids or gasoline-powered vehicles. Many drivers focus on fuel efficiency metrics such as miles per gallon, with some achieving 40 mpg in conventional hybrids, overlooking the potential cost savings and environmental benefits of full electrification. While EREVs offer a compromise, reducing range anxiety without requiring frequent charging, their long-term success may depend on broader shifts in consumer behavior and environmental awareness.
Hyundai’s EREV rollout reflects a calculated response to regulatory and market pressures, positioning the company at the forefront of a rapidly evolving automotive landscape.
